Aruba is an island off the north coast of Venezuela. At about 8 by 15 miles it is quite small and can easily be toured in one day. What would I suggest? No: leave your umbrella at home. At about 12” of rain per year, Aruba’s climate is drier than many a desert! And you will notice that in the landscape; cactus plants in all shapes are over-abundant. And everywhere dry, dusty land; no stage props would be needed to film a western here! So the chance that rainy weather would rob you of some rays is nil. Average temperature during the day is about 90°F. After breakfast I would head for the Natural Bridge (carved out of the coral cliffs by the sea). From there I’d visit Ayo which is a natural rock formation consisting of huge boulders heaped as if put there by giants sometime far in the past. Then I’d go to the natural pool, which is fed by the waves on the north coast splashing into a natural basin. Next on my list are the mines where phosphate was once mined for use in the manufacture of fertilizers. Nearby is Colorado Point, which I consider the most beautiful coastline of the island. It’ll be going up and down cliffs so a quick dip in the turquoise waters at Rodgers Beach afterwards will be welcome followed by lunch. After lunch I’d head back to Oranjestad, which is the capital of Aruba to do some window-shopping in one of the malls in the harbor area, one of the most picturesque in the Caribbean. Maybe we could take a sip in Iguana Joes overlooking the waterfront and the beautiful Aruban girls strolling by……… who knows: we might get a glimpse of Tamara, the most beautiful Miss Aruba ever (and for the women: yes the men are sexy too!). You can also admire the architecture where the Dutch influence is obvious! After lunch is a good time to go to the beaches, one of the best-known features of the island. On the west coast you’ll find miles of powdery white sand beaches. More to the north is Malmok where you can snorkel and enjoy the underwater scenery. If you’re more courageous you can also dive off the Antiya wreck; the remains of a freighter torpedoed during World War 2. Even the meek can enjoy the fish and sea life from nearby through the windows of a submarine. Some may say that the island is over-developed, loosing some of its Caribbean flavor: on the other hand you will find a modern infrastructure including a well-equipped hospital, safe drinking water, safe food and relatively low crime. What more can one ask from a destination? If you feel like refreshing, do so in a hurry so you can watch the sun set while sipping a Piña Colada. At 7:00 we’ll have dinner; there are about 500 restaurants on the island but I’d suggest French cuisine. Afterwards we can have an after dinner drink at one of the nightclubs, maybe dance a little and really late we could try our luck in one of the casinos. What a busy day: well, tomorrow you can always play lazybones on the beach…………. After all you are on vacation.

| A
brief description of
John

|
My Job: Facility Manager at the (only) hospital in Aruba.
Extracurricular activities:
- I have a small catering business, catering private parties from 50 persons and up (see photo). I only accept an average of 2 caterings a month; not much but, in the old fashioned way, I try to give my very best to each customer.
- I founded and lead an organization, whose name would translate into something like "Feed the Children". As the name implies; we provide a breakfast (sandwich and drink) every day to needy children in primary school. At the moment we have some 140 children enrolled and our aim is to achieve 300 by year's end. Funds are acquired by means of sponsorships; one can "sponsor" a child for $ 12.00 a month. We also receive donations from e.g. service clubs.
Hobbies: I like anything which will stimulate my creativity. I enjoy photography, writing, desktop publishing, playing around with photoshop. I also enjoy, but don't have not enough time to do handicrafts.
Furthermore, I enjoy reading, corresponding and making new friends. I enjoy cooking and eating.
Whatever time is left I gladly spend sleeping....
