Ok,
so you're ready to try a meetURplanet.com type of adventure, great!
You and I both know this is the future of travel.
Whether you're travelling or hosting we have tips to save you time
and money. This advice is based from our own personal experiences
at this style of travel and meetings.
Tips for the traveller.
| |
To
improve your chances of successfully obtaining hosts, you should
only contact those who most closely match your travel requirements.
For example, if you are looking for a home stay, then only contact
those hosts who have indicated they are interested in providing
home stays. |
| |
When
making your initial contact with potential hosts, ideally start
one to three months before the date of your visit. This gives
both of you time to get to know each other and make plans together. |
| |
How
many hosts should you try to meet when you are visiting their
city or town? Well this largely depends on how long you are
going to spend in their area. Generally I have found if you
are staying in the one place for a week then three to four hosts
should be plenty to keep you busy and entertained! Four allows
a backup in case someone can't meet you at the last minute for
whatever reasons. You will also find you will probably get on
well with some or all of your hosts and will want to meet them
more than once. |
| |
A
little concerned about meeting strangers off the net? Sure we
can understand that. Whenever you meet people you don't know,
whether from the net or in real life you should take the normal
precautions. |
|
| 1) |
Establish
the identity of the person you will meet before you leave
for your holiday.
| - |
Send
them a post card to either their home or work address.
Make sure they receive it and allow about two weeks
for them to get it. |
| - |
Call
them on the phone before meeting, whether from home
or when you first arrive at your destination. |
| - |
Know
whom you are looking for before meeting them, so
send some pictures if they don't have one on their
profile. |
| - |
When
you first meet suggest exchanging business cards
and/or showing some form of personal identification
(drivers license, credit card etc) to each other. |
|
| 2) |
Tell
someone where you are going and whom you are going to
meet. |
| 3) |
Meet
your host for the first time in a public place. |
|
By now you will have a good feel as to what they are like
and your judgement will guide you. |
|
|
Please
Note:
It is your responsibility to satisfy yourself as to the person
is whom they claim.

| |
Make
suggestions to your host of the type of activities you would
like to see and do in their city (they will usually be glad). |
| |
Approach
your meeting with an open mind, be tolerant of others differences
and appreciate the time and effort your host has given to help
you. |
| |
Always
thank your host even if things don't go perfectly to plan (often
the best adventures are unplanned like the time I went to China
and met five girls! Ah but that's another story haha). Giving
a small souvenir to your host can also mean a lot. |
| |
Make
sure you take some pictures of you and your host and send them
in to the site! |
| |
If
you are thinking of doing a home stay with someone have somewhere
booked for the first night just in case things don't quite work
out. |
| |
Finally,
don't forget to take a copy of your host's residential address,
phone numbers' (work, home and mobile) and email address with
you! |
Most important of all remember to have fun and enjoy yourselves. It's
a big planet out there, so get going and meet some of it!
A hot tip
| |
Take
or hire a mobile or cell phone when you are travelling. You
will need to be contactable when you're on the move and especially
when you are trying to rendezvous with your host in an unfamiliar
place. |
A hot, hot tip
| |
If
you take your own phone buy a phone card from a local phone
supplier and replace your normal sim card with your new local
number. This way you and your new local friends can call each
other for local call costs rather than at international prices!
To ensure you're still contactable from home if need be, first
make a quick call to your message bank and leave a voice message
before removing your normal sim card. Leave a message saying
something like my new direct number while in Hong Kong is xxxx.
When you are ready to leave for your home country, simply remove
your temporary sim card and replace it with your normal sim
card and you're ready for action again.
